English as a Second Language (ESL)

Plaza’s ESL program focuses on teaching adult students essential communication skills for their daily lives. The program is designed to be practical and help adult immigrants of all nationalities adjust to living in the United States. The schedule and curriculum, which changes each session, allow students to enroll quickly and attend multiple sessions in each level of English before advancing to the next. We offer multiple levels of ESL classes, ranging from beginning English literacy to an intermediate level of English conversation and grammar.

Bilingual Computer

Taught in mixed English and Spanish, Plaza’s computer class offers individualized instruction. Whether just getting started using a computer or needing help with a specific more advanced computing need, the objective of this class is to help students to become self-sufficient in using computers.

Computers have become an essential part of everyday life. We use them at work, at school, at home, to keep in touch with family and friends, and to interact with people all over the world. Our instructor aims to understand the students’ goals in using the computer and help them learn the skills to achieve that aim.

Examples of what is covered includes:

  • Keyboarding – Learn or improve typing skills, speed, and accuracy.

  • Using Internet and e-mail.

  • Filling out job applications online.

  • Word processing – Become comfortable using word processing for personal and professional tasks. Learn to create, edit, and print documents.

  • Using smartphones and tablets – Learn to use these devices as an important communication and knowledge tool.

US Citizenship Exam Preparation

When immigrants are eligible to become citizens of the United States and are preparing for the USCIS naturalization interview, Plaza’s US Citizenship Exam Preparation offers support in studying the history and civics of this county.

The instructor uses materials provided by USCIS, as well as other resources, to help students navigate current citizenship application and interview requirements. The course covers the birth of our nation, the branches of government, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights and other topics covered in the naturalization interview.

The course content and teaching methods support learning rather than rote memorization of the potential questions that will be asked in the naturalization interview, helping applicants feel more prepared and relaxed during their interview. The class can be repeated as many times as needed for the applicant to feel prepared for their interview.

Oregon Driver License Written Exam Preparation

Driver’s Licenses for All, enacted in 2021, means that the State of Oregon does not require proof of legal presence or citizenship to get a driver’s license, nor is a Social Security number or a United States birth certificate required. Plaza’s Oregon Driver License Written Exam Preparation class offers support in preparing for the written portion of the exam that is administered by the Department of Motor Vehicles in order to obtain an Oregon driver’s license.

The course content and teaching methods support learning rather than rote memorization of the driver manual and potential questions that will be asked on the written exam. This approach helps aspiring drivers to more acutely learn the rules of the road and avoid future incidents or citations, and also helps students feel more prepared and relaxed during their exam. The instructor also provides guidance and tips for taking a multiple-choice computer-based exam.

The class is primarily taught in mixed Spanish and English to meet the needs of all students, and can be repeated as many times as needed for the applicant to feel prepared for the computer-based written exam. The exam itself is offered in several different languages.

You will need to obtain an Oregon Driver Manual in the language of your preference and bring it to class. You can obtain the manual for free at any DMV location.
